On the 23-24th of April, partners gathered in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, for the project’s six month review. The team celebrated the successful first results of gasification tests using Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) and waste wood, and announced that is preparing for trials with innovative feedstocks like automotive shredded residues and black pellets made from sewage sludge.

This spring, partner TORWASH produced two tons of black pellets for further tests. During the meeting, participants had a tour at TORWASH’s plant to see the production process.

In the BUTTERFLY process, feedstock is used to produce syngas through indirect gasification, and then further converted into DiMethyl Ether (rDME) and Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) via the SEDMES technology. This year, a key challenge is integrating TNO’s MILENA gasifier with the SEDMES unit for continuous rDME production. The final step will be validating the integrated process at ENGIE’s advanced GAYA platform in France.
